Warehousing: Principles and Practices in a Global Economy - IIEI-379

Course Description: This six-week course examines the principles and practices of modern warehousing. Particular emphasis is focused on understanding how warehousing can be used as a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. This course investigates and defines the activities and functions common to most warehouses as it develops an understanding of the principles of modern warehousing within the context of the global economy. Upon completion, students will be able to analyze and assess warehousing needs and conceptually design warehousing solutions.

Prerequisite: 21st Century Logistics (IIEI-202)

Course Credit: 3 Credit Hours

  • To know the value of third-party warehousing.

Warehousing as an Operational Element

  • To assess how modern warehousing fits into the strategic intent of an organization.

Warehousing as a Supportive Integrated System within Supply Chain Management
  • To demonstrate knowledge of how modern warehousing can serve as a core competency.
  • To analyze the factors that contribute to comparative advantage within the warehouse system. 

Mechanics of Warehousing

  • To analyze and assess the relationship and function of the various mechanical processes that comprise the modern warehouse, including:

Warehouse Utilization and Workforce Design

  • To know how to evaluate warehouse utilization
  • To be able to establish warehouse performance criteria  

Building an Integrated Warehousing Model

  • To be able assess the needs and design an integrated warehousing solution concept.
