Documentation for the Global Village - IIEI-225

Course Description: As the world comes together as one large marketplace, the importance of understanding the documentation requirements of all members of the world of international trade community increases. This accredited, six-week, online course specifically focuses on the major documentation requirements, processes and practices, regardless of country, that currently affect the movement of goods between countries. This detailed hands-on practical course will develop a working understanding of what documents are to be used, when they are used and why, what are the problems that may arise from incorrect usage of these documents and who can fix problems if they occur.

Major Course Topics & Course Outcomes

As a result of the group and individual activities included in this course, the student will acquire the following knowledge and skills that can be applied to the workplace:

Various forms used in International Trade

  • To understand the usage of the most common forms used in international trade, including:
  • Ocean Bill of Lading
  • Commercial Invoices
  • Proforma Invoices
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Shipper's Export Declaration
  • General and Special Inspection Reports
  • General and Validated Export Licenses

Common Documentation Problems

  • To have an appreciation for the most common documentation problems and ways to avoid them.

Global Import Duty/Tariff Schedules

  • To understand the importance of correct documentation content and its possible impact on the valuation of shipments between countries.

General NAFTA and EU Regulations

  • To know the general guidelines set forth in these two treaties and their impact on the documentation process.

Livestock Export and Import Regulations

  • To be able to correctly document the shipment of livestock to meet the most common country requirements.

Computerized Documentation

  • To appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of computerized documentation

Major Import and Export Trade Restrictions Around the World

  • To know the major trade restrictions existing in the world today.

Shipment Marking

  • To know how to insure that the marking on a shipment will communicate the proper information to the recipient end.

Special Certificate Requirements

  • To understand and know the use of most the common Special Certificates use in international trade.

The United Nations Green Earth Initiative

  • To understand the impact of the Green Earth Initiative on international trade documentation.

GATT Treaty

  • To be familiar with the GATT Treaty and how it applies to international trade.

World Trade Organization (WTO)

  • To understand the framework of the WTO and to appreciate the agreements that the members of the WTO ratified.

Documentation Dispute Resolution Alternatives

  • To have a working understanding of the various dispute resolution alternatives that exist when errors in documentation occur.
