Introduction to Physical Science - IIEI-171

Course Description: In this survey course, the world around us is explored to understand the physical properties of objects and their relationship to the universe. The general laws and theories of science form the basis for the exploration process that examines the physical world around us.

Course Credit: 3 Credit Hours

Major Course Topics & Course Outcomes

As a result of the group and individual activities included in this course, the student will acquire the following knowledge and skills that can be applied to the workplace:

Objects and Properties
  • To know the physical aspects of objects.
  • To understand how properties of objects are defined and quantified
  • To know how measurement systems are used to define properties
  • To understand how relationships are the basis of laws and principles, and how models and theories are used to define these relationships.

Laws of Motion

  • To understand the laws of motion.
  • To know Newton's Law of Gravitation

Energy Chap

  • To comprehend the concept of energy
  • To understand the concept of potential energy, energy flow, energy form and conversion
  • To know the kinetic molecular theory and how it relates to particles.
  • To know how thermometers work
  • To be familiar with the concept of heat and energy transfer

Electricity and Light

  • To examine the connection between human physiology and behavior.

Atomic Structure

  • To be able to discuss the impact of a person's perception on understanding.

Compounds and Chemical

  • To be able to summarize the various ways in which people learn.

Universe, Solar System, and Earth

  • To understand how people store and retrieve memories

Rocks and Minerals

  • To be able to discuss the cognitive processes of thinking, language and intelligence and their impact a person's perceptions of the world.

Earth's Surface

  • To identify the various approaches to motivation
  • To understand how emotions impact or cognitive processes

Geologic Time

  • To have a basic understanding of the theories of personality.
